Port Experience Centre Portlantis Second Maasvlakte

Construction of the Port Experience Centre, also known as Portlantis, on the Second Maasvlakte started in June 2023.

The Port of Rotterdam Authority awarded the construction and maintenance contract to Aannemersbedrijf G. Van der Ven

The centre is the successor to the current Futureland, which has been in operation again since 2009 and has attracted over 100,000 visitors.

Unique experience
from nature to industry

The 3500m2 building designed by MVRDV will be open to visitors by the end of 2024. The unique and prominent location on the recreational beach will allow visitors to see both the dunes, the North Sea and the impressive port itself. Inside the building, a permanent exhibition developed by Kossmanndejong will take you through everything related to the harbour. The large panoramic windows focus on different elements in the port that enhance the content of the exhibition, from nature to industry.

The MVRDV-designed building is completely energy-neutral by deploying optimal insulation, efficient installations, 266 solar panels and even its own windmill. In addition, the main construction is fully demountable and largely built from recycled materials, including donor steel and partially recycled façade panels.

Our share in the
Port Experience Centre

Commissioned by Van Sluisveld Steel Projects B.V., we were also allowed to contribute to this special project.

By supplying the perforated stair treads and landings in the striking red RAL colour for the entire outdoor staircase construction, we are contributing to a piece of security and safety for the centre.

Thanks to the anti-slip perforation and optimal drainage, the various levels and viewing points are safely accessible, with the optimal experience being the great view from the panoramic roof. The landings between the stairs all have a different shape, which was skilfully planned and calculated by our engineers. Thanks to the coating, the steps and landings are optimally resistant to the most extreme weather conditions, including the effects of wind and salt.

About the Port Experience Centre

The Port Experience Centre, also known as Portlantis, is the successor to FutureLand. The temporary information centre opened in 2009 during the construction of the second artificial extension of the Rotterdam port, known as Maasvlakte 2. The success of FutureLand prompted the creation of a more complete information centre with a larger, permanent exhibition to teach people more about Europe's largest harbour.

The building approaches its task in a practical, no-nonsense way and follows the spirit of the port with its simple functionality, striking presence and industrial materials. The orientation of each floor and the direction of the main window corresponds to its function: in the ground-floor café, this window faces west for views of the dunes and the North Sea, while diners in the fourth-floor restaurant can enjoy evening views of both the North Sea and the twinkling lights of the harbour.
